AI Brings a New Wave of Cybersecurity Threats

AI hacking is on the rise
Despite its widespread global adoption, AI is still in its infancy as a technology, and we are still learning what harm it is capable of facilitating.
Recent reports have exposed several high-profile incidents where AI models have carried out cyberattacks autonomously. Leading AI developers including Meta, OpenAI, and Anthropic have all reported instances where their AI models were able to initiate high-level cyberattacks against various targets.
While these AI models currently lack the conscious ability to act independently, a lack of appropriate guardrails mean they are able to come up with sophisticated cyberattacks in order to achieve seemingly innocuous goals. This ultimately raises the question of what these models are capable of in the hands of hackers and highlights the concerning potential of AI to be used as a tool to make hacking easier and more effective.
What is the threat of AI hacking?
Cybersecurity has always been vital for any organisation to protect sensitive information and prevent system outages, but in the age of AI, this need has become far more urgent.
AI now represents a new tool in the hacker’s toolkit, which has the potential to make their hacking attempts faster, more effective, and scalable. It allows malicious third-parties to perform far more sophisticated and precise attacks, which they may not have been capable of in the past.
Growing capabilities in image, video, and audio generation have also opened doors to new methods of social engineering, where outsiders can easily impersonate people of authority in an attempt to gain access to otherwise protected systems, or convince others to take action on their behalf.
In 2024, a finance worker at a multinational firm in Hong Kong was tricked into paying out US$25 million after scammers used deepfake technology on a video call to impersonate real employees, including the Chief Financial Officer.
How can you protect your organisation?
The most effective way to protect your organisation against any cybersecurity threat is with an offsite, air-gapped backup.
The term “air-gapped” refers to a backup which is completely free from outside connections, and cannot be accessed remotely by third-parties.
At TIMG, we back up your data and systems to physical storage media, which are then stored in our secure, purpose-built vaults.
- The ultimate failsafe: Physical backup media is not connected to the internet and therefore cannot be accessed remotely by malicious third parties.
- Total security: Offsite backups are physically stored in our vaults inside our secure facilities. 24/7 CCTV, electric fencing, and access controls ensure complete security.
- Minimise downtime: If your system goes down, offsite backups allow your data to be restored quickly and securely, ensuring business continuity.
